OASIS web standards group to work on counter-money laundering / anti terrorist financing systems.
The OASIS Internet Web standards consortium has formed of a new technical committee (TC) to develop a universal global framework to facilitate rapid discovery and sharing of suspected criminal and terrorist evidence by law enforcement agencies.
The OASIS LegalXML Lawful Intercept XML (LI-XML) Technical Committee was created to meet critical needs emerging from several national and inter-governmental mandates around the world, including the United States Homeland Security Information Sharing Act of 2002, the new Lawful Intercept additional protocol of the European Convention on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters, and e-Government mandates in Europe and the United States.
OASIS says "the enhanced precision, authentication, and audit features provided by LI-XML will result in greater public trust in the traditionally sensitive area of legal discovery."
Amongst the aims of the scheme are "by 1 Aug 2003, provide for a common global means of authenticating parties, schemas, and transport security associated with the Legal Interception process. This may be done in co-operation with the LegalXML eNotarization Technical Committee"
The application of XML standards will mean that the system will operate independent of the platform and OASIS has said that it will make the results available free of charge. OASIS is sponsored by most of the biggest names in computing and the internet world.
