Tehran holds back on Counter-Money Laundering Law.

The radical nature of Iran's proposed new law has resulted in a review of the proposals and their effect.

Iran's government has pulled back from the expected approval of the new counter-money laundering laws. The laws contain a range of measures that are novel in Iranian law. Even so, Iran is expected to be the first entirely Islamic country to put in place a comprehensive set of counter-money laundering laws.

The fact that the law has not been passed should not be regarded as a "delay" said one expert. There had been an attempt to fast-track the bill but the Majlis decided that the Bill was so radical that it should be subject to proper parliamentary scrutiny, and not rushed through without consideration of the extent of the law and its effects and consequences.
