AML / CFT: company cheated nuns of USD285,000

Linda Rose Gagnon, 57, has surrendered to custody on an indictment that as the controller of Rose Enterprises, Inc. she defrauded U.S. Province of the Religious of Jesus and Mary, Inc., a group of Roman Catholic nuns, out of USD285,000.

Gagnon has not yet entered a plea to the charges that she committed three counts of wire fraud.

It is alleged that she visited a convent where some of the nuns live and learned that they were interested in purchasing a propery in San Diego, California. The created a letterhead for a fictitious law firm and presented to the nuns "evidence" that the transaction was in progress and requested them to transmit the amount of USD285,000.

But, say prosecutors, she spent the money on lingerie, pet sitting, repayments on her car loan, personal expenses and shopping.

No plea having yet been entered, Gagnon is presumed not guilty.
