AML / CFT: His name is Mudd - or how one man became a due diligence nightmare

Born in Hong Kong, officially resident in Australia but a student in the USA, 23 year old Kelsey Lord Michael Mudd has been convicted in Hong Kong of the manslaughter of a Hong Kong taxi driver. But it's his documentation that raises serious worries about due diligence.

How many people is Kelsey Mudd?

Drunk, Mudd stole a taxi, drove it dangerously, killed its driver and collided with two more taxis.

Mudd got into the taxi as a passenger. The driver, it was alleged, decided he was too drunk and told him to get out. When Mudd didn't, the driver got out, went to the door next to Mudd and tried to drag him out. Somehow - it was never explained exactly how and Mudd claims to have no recollection of the incident - Mudd got behind the wheel and drove away, dragging the driver who was entangled in the seat belt.

After hitting a barrier the driver was dislodged and Mudd drove on, other drivers missing him but eventually colliding with two more taxis.

Jailed for four years and three months, Mudd will remain in Hong Kong.

During the trial, it emerged that Mudd holds multiple citizenships: Britain, Australian and USA. He holds a valid passport for each.

It is not clear under which passport he entered Hong Kong.
