AML / CFT: Indonesia seeks fugitive politician

Indonesian authorities are mounting a global manhunt for Muhammad Nazaruddin after he fled the country via Singapore.

Singapore was irritated when it heard that Indonesian authorities were saying that Nazaruddin was in the city state because he had left, openly, weeks earlier before any charges were laid. Huffily, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a public statement saying that they had told the Indonesian government that when asked about his whereabouts some time ago.

The ministry said that there were no charges, no warrant and no restrictions on his passport and that there was no reason to prevent his leaving. Singapore had told the Indonesians where Nazaruddin had left for but had no information on his movements after that.

Indonesia is now preparing a request to Interpol for an international arrest warrant, similar to that under which Dubai authorities arrested Nigerian politician James Ibori.

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission named Nazaruddin a suspect on 30 June.

But a travel ban was announced on 24 June - only hours after Nazaruddin had left Indonesia. On 2 July, his passport was suspended and governments around the world have been informed that his Indonesian passport is now invalid.
