WMLRO.Com: door to door tax collector stole taxes paid

Geoffrey Eley, 44, of Redditch, Worcestershire, UK was employed by HM Revenue and Customs to visit businesses and individuals and collect tax payments due. But having extracted the money in cash, he kept it.

Eley tricked15 taxpayers with photocopies of official HMRC receipts, leading them to believe that they had settled their debts with HMRC.

Eley, a serving HMRC officer of almost 27 years, stole a total of GBP84,950; individual amounts taken from taxpayers ranged from GBP1,000 to GBP28,904. He attempted to cover his tracks by crediting the duped taxpayers’ accounts with cheque payments received from unconnected third party taxpayers.

Eley pleaded guilty to 13 counts of theft and one count of money laundering at Worcester Crown Court on 10 May 2010. He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison at Hereford Crown Court on 18 June 2010.
