wmlro.com: Fake charity founder jailed
Everyone has heard of tales of charities where the founders dip their hands into the pot from time to time. But Rajendren Rajamani was in a class of his own: he created three organisations, called them charities, and then spent the money donated to them.
Rajamani set up The Children of Singapore Foundation, Children's Leukaemia Foundation and Club Sunshine, previously known as Kids-In-Distress Foundation.
He made false claims for what the organisations would do, collected more than SGD110,000 - and then spent it.
On one fundraising event alone, he collected SGD53,000 and spent 48,000 of it.
Rajamani also caused distress to his family: without their knowledge, he named them as officers of the charities.
Sentencing 26 year old Rajamani to five years' jail, District Judge Eddy said "Not one iota of evidence in terms of documents has been presented to show that some genuine charity work had ever been undertaken by him through these organisations."
