Banking: Embarrassment for UK bank - Egg and spam for breakfast

UK internet bank Egg, which has from time to time been a victim of phishing campaigns, is being used by internet spammers to hit e-mail boxes at breakfast time in the UK.

Victims of the spam are told "You have registered to receive our emails through one of our partners. This email is brought to you by an independent marketing company, not from the advertiser directly."

The spam, headlined "0% on Balance Transfers until December 2011," does indeed mention this offer for new customers.

But the bulk of the message relates not to the Egg card directly but a company called "QuidCo" of which it says "Egg Cash Back Store is powered by Quidco, cash back offers are obtained from a third party website and are subject to Quidco's terms and conditions. The Quidco service includes special terms and offers for customers with whom we have an Egg Card(Visa) agreement. We will pass relevant information about our customers to Quidco to the extent reasonably necessary for the administration of the Quidco service. Quidco will not contact you, or give your details to third parties, for marketing purposes unless you have agreed."

The spammer says "We only send authorised communication."

For Egg, the problem now is how they verify that their ads have been sent only to legitimate targets.Time for an audit of exactly where, when and why victims "registered."
