Retail banking: Another Aussie tech failure delays salaries

Last November, a computer glitch at National Australia Bank left customers short of money as their salaries got trapped in the system. Now it's happened again.

When last November's glitch happened, the bank said that it was due to a computer file that had "become corrupted." Customers were advised to visit their branches if they could not get money out of ATMs because the missing money meant their accounts were empty.

So, when another similar problem arose on Friday last week, the bank was horrified. And so were its customers - and customers of other banks who either saw money leave their accounts but not arrive in those of NAB holders or had customers complaining that money they were expecting from NAB customers had not arrived.

The bank issued a statement at 3:30 pm on Friday 15th April saying that it "is currently experiencing some delays and as a result some customer accounts may not yet be up to date." It said it "understands and regrets any inconvenience this may have caused customers."

Four hours later, the bank said that it would open more than 100 branches open across the country and that the bank was in the process of "crediting NAB customer balances." Also "customers of other banks whose accounts have been affected should also be restored overnight."

Today, the bank says that the process "was successfully completed overnight and affected accounts should now be up to date and operating as normal."
