Diebold says that many criminals have moved on from stealing money and now focus on grabbing customers' data. So it is "re-engineering" ATMs to reduce the risk.
According to Diebold, their new development will not only detect skimming but also help to prevent it. The modification is to the machine's bezel - that's the card slot and the surrounding area.
The company says "The re-engineered bezel incorporates geometric fascia alterations, making it more difficult for perpetrators to attach a skimmer to its surface and is designed to eliminate the market inventory of card skimmers. The re-engineered bezel helps protect the integrity of the bezel during removal attacks and features a removal switch that will send an alarm to the alarm system notifying the financial institution of any attempt to remove the bezel. "
But in addition, customers will have the option to adopt exchangeable bezels. The Opteva BezelSentry Service is a subscription service under which a variety of bezels can be fitted either in a pre-determined schedule or if a machine is compromised. The aim is simple: to make it expensive and complicated for criminals to design skimmers that will fit all possible combinations and also to make it more time consuming (and therefore increase the risk of being caught) to fit and remove a skimmer.
The new designs can be retrofitted to existing Opteva ATMs and are standard on all new deliveries.
