FI Fraud: Nedbank phishing scam takes on new dimension

A series of phishing scam e-mails in recent days targeting customers of South Africa's Nedbank has caused considerable annoyance. Nedbank is taking steps to reduce the problem - or so the latest fraudulent e-mail says.

Note: Nedbank has in fact deployed Rapport software to try to reduce the incidence of phishing and malware scams afflicting its customers. Nedbank's information regarding Rapport is at
http://www.nedbank.co.za/website/content/rapport/. Contrary to the fraudulent message, it is not mandatory for internet banking customers to download and use the software.

The following is the the text of the fraudulent mail.

Subject: Rapport download from NEDBANK

Due to the recent Malware and Phishing attacks encountered by our customers,
Nedbank has made it mandatory
to all Customers to download the Rapport Software that will help fight against it.

Our system shows that you have not downloaded the latest version of this
software that was introduced on 30-12-2010.
It is your responsibility to protect your account by installing this new patch
as a precautionary measure.

If you do not log on to download this software now, Nedbank will not be liable
for any theft that may occur on your account.

Rapport software immediately.
